(ORDO NEWS) — The new variant of the coronavirus, first discovered in the UK at the end of 2020, has spread to 70 countries around the world, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.
Experts believe that the UK variant could be up to 70% more transmissible.
The United Nations health agency also reported that another variant of the coronavirus, discovered in South Africa, has spread to 31 other countries.
The WHO also said a variant discovered in Brazil had spread to eight other countries.
The variant identified in South Africa is of particular concern, as studies have shown that it can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines currently on the market.
However, the vaccine of the American company Moderna seems to work against new variants of the coronavirus, discovered in the United Kingdom and South Africa, the scientists of the company have said.
According to them, early laboratory tests suggest that antibodies that stimulate vaccines can recognize and fight new variants.
However, scientists say more studies need to be done to confirm this.
