(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the New Zealand research institute GNS Science plotted the shape and size of the continent of Zealand in unprecedented detail, according to Business Insider.
The hypothesis of the lost continent of Zealand was put forward in 2017 by a scientific team of 11 geologists from New Zealand, New Caledonia and Australia.
They believe that the mainland broke away from Australia 60–85 million years ago and was flooded about 23 million years ago. Only fragments remained above the water – the islands of New Caledonia and the New Zealand islands of the North and South. They make up about 6% of the entire continent.
According to the theory, the process known as subduction led to the disappearance of the continent: the Pacific plate sank below the continental crust of Zealand. The base of the continent collapsed and drowned.
