What the Earth looks like from the OSIRIS-REx space station: at a distance of 63.6 million kilometers

(ORDO NEWS) — In 2018, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft took an amazing picture of the Earth, being 63.6 million kilometers from us.

The American interplanetary station OSIRIS-REx took this picture on January 17, 2018, as part of technical tests. At the time of shooting, the device was at a distance of 63.6 million kilometers from the Earth, moving away at a speed of 8.5 km/s.

In the photo you can see our planet – a tiny bright dot in the center, as well as the Moon – an even smaller dot to the right of the Earth.

However, this is not all that is in the image. So, as NASA explained in the image description, in the upper left corner you can see the Pleiades in the constellation Taurus.

In the upper right corner of the photo is Hamal, the brightest star in the constellation Aries. The Earth and Moon in the image are surrounded by five stars that are part of the constellation Cetus.

The OSIRIS-REx station was launched on September 8, 2016. She reached the asteroid Bennu in 2018, and two years later she managed to pick up soil samples. The return of the device to Earth is scheduled for September 2023.
