(ORDO NEWS) — Oceans cover most of the Earth, including the longest mountain range, the deepest depression, and the natural ancient “bridges” that people used to cross from continent to continent. But what happens if the oceans disappear?
The topic “What will the Earth be like if all the oceans dry up” sounds very interesting, especially if it is not about a catastrophe, but about a visual experiment, during which we can see not just the Earth without oceans, but how it changes with different amounts of water on a surface. At the same time, you can observe the volumes of disappearing water.
As the oceans gradually become shallow, the first patches of previously hidden land appear: continental shelves – the underwater edges of continents. The beginning of the video is slowed down due to the fact that the shallowing is accompanied by the exposure of a large number of underwater landscapes.
It can be seen that the continental shelves form land “bridges” that were used by people when migrating from continent to continent. Tens of thousands of years ago, our ancestors could travel from continental Europe to Great Britain, from Siberia to Alaska, and from Australia to neighboring islands.
During the last ice age, huge volumes of water were “locked” in the form of ice at the planet’s poles. That is why land bridges used to exist. Each of them allowed people to migrate. And when the ice age ended, the water isolated people from each other.
In a world with shallow oceans, the level of which has fallen from 2000 to 3000 meters, there is also the longest chain of mountains on Earth. It is a mid-ocean ridge that stretches 60,000 kilometers across the globe. Most of the ridge (90%) is now hidden under water.
As soon as the oceans become shallow by 6000 meters, most of the water on Earth disappears. But it takes almost another 5000 meters to drain the bottom completely, including the Mariana Trench.
The animation shows that the ocean floor is just as variable and interesting in its geology as the continents. This is not just the bottom of the ocean being exposed, but the ancient history of mankind.
