(ORDO NEWS) — Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been erupting since 1983.
When lava emanating from the volcano reached the Pacific Ocean for the first time in three years, a “smile” formed in the crater.
The incredible video footage of the smiling face of the volcano was filmed from a helicopter by Mick Kalber of Tropical Visions Video/Paradise Helicopters.
One gets the feeling that Kilauea deliberately flaunted his “smile”, but experts have a scientific explanation for such bright and unusual spots.
It all comes down to normal volcanic activity. Since the lava lake inside the crater circulates, the ascent and descent of lava occur on opposite sides of the lake.
This counter-movement often causes molten lava to splatter, forming bright spots on the dark, semi-solid surface of the lake.
The circulation can also cause parts of the surface to move apart, creating lines that expose the lava underneath.
This time, these processes took place according to the scheme, as a result of which a cheerful face appeared.
Lucky for us, the helicopter operator was there at the right time and captured this enchanting moment for posterity.
