US stocks opened a sharp decline in major indices
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Trades on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday opened with a significant decrease in the main indexes against the background of the statements made by the US President Donald Trump at the White House briefing on Tuesday that the coming two weeks will be a very difficult period for the United States due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
According to the data available on the trading floor website, in the first minutes after the start of the session, the American Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 719 points (3.28%) to 21 197 points.
The S&P 500 index, which includes the 500 largest companies in the US market, fell 82.81 points (3.19%) to reach 2,502 points.
The Nasdaq Electronic Exchange Index fell 219 points (2.83%), to 7,482 points.
“Financial markets are responding to the likely increase in the duration and magnitude of the economic shocks caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which may indicate that the consequences for the economy may be deeper and greater than anticipated a week ago,” CNN quoted the expert as saying.
