(ORDO NEWS) — An American schoolgirl was sent to prison for not doing her homework, Detroit Metro Times reported.
Last year, Grace was charged with assault and theft and was allowed to remain free on probation. However, in May of this year, the judge sent a 15-year-old girl to a complex for juvenile offenders, believing that failure to do her homework was a violation of conditions.
Michigan executives and legislators are fighting to get Grace free. They called the court decision “more than worrying.” It is noted that the schoolgirl suffers from attention deficit disorder and it is especially difficult for her to learn online classes, to which educational institutions were forced to switch due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier in the United States, a federal judge in the District Court for the Central District of California ordered the release of migrant children who are being held with their parents in American immigration prisons.
Judge Dolly Gee has spoken out against prolonged arrests of migrant families during the novel coronavirus pandemic. She referred to the COVID-19 outbreak in two of the three U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) correctional facilities that hold migrant children and said there is no more time for half-measures. Gee’s decision concerns 124 minors who have spent more than 20 days in ICE immigration prisons.
