(ORDO NEWS) — More than 25,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the US according to the latest figures from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
California has the highest number of confirmed cases among US states with 4,886 cases, followed by New York with 3,881 and Florida with 2,455, according to the CDC.
Monkeypox infection is rarely fatal, with most cases resolving within two to four weeks. According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate for this disease is between 3 and 6 percent.
However, immunosuppressed people are more likely to develop severe illness when they become infected, according to the CDC.
Nearly four months after the first reported case of monkeypox in the US, the virus is showing promising signs of retreat, according to a New York Times report.
“But, unfortunately, the number of cases is accelerating in several states and jurisdictions, including Indiana, Virginia and Massachusetts.
Black and Hispanic men account for nearly two-thirds of those infected, but only about one-fourth of those vaccinated to date,” the report says.
