US plans to create a “top-secret” F / A-XX fighter by the 2030s
(ORDO NEWS) — The U.S. Navy’s yet-to-be-approved fiscal year 2024 budget includes a request for nearly $1.53 billion to develop a next-generation fighter known as the F/A-XX.
The F/A-XX is part of the Navy’s major Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, which should not be confused with the US Air Force‘s initiative of the same name. It is not entirely clear what exactly the Navy’s NGAD program includes, as it is classified.
However, a Navy Aviation Vision document published in 2021 contains some information, including that the new F/A-XX fighter will replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in the 2030s.
The exact characteristics of the aircraft were not specified, but it is noted that it will have greater speed and range than the Super Hornet, and will also play the role of coordinator of various drones that will carry equipment, electronic warfare, serve as communication centers and perform other functions.
It is also noted that the requested amount for the next year of the Navy is only 5% of the total budget that is planned to be spent on the creation of the F/A-XX.
