US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Washington has begun exploring options for punishing China because of the coronavirus pandemic, writes The Washington Post on April 30, citing senior White House officials.
According to the publication on Thursday, American politicians and intelligence officials will begin to develop measures against Beijing. Various options are being considered, including the recovery of material compensation from China and depriving the country of sovereign immunity.
“In private [US President Donald] Trump and his aides discussed the issue of depriving China of its sovereign immunity in order to allow the US government or those affected by the virus to sue China for damages,” one of them said.
In addition, among the possible “punishment” options is the probability of the US refusing to pay debt obligations to China. At the same time, Beijing is the largest holder of the US public debt.
Sources of the newspaper did not exclude that US measures would result in retaliatory actions by the PRC.
Earlier, Trump has repeatedly held China responsible for spreading the coronavirus around the world, saying that Beijing is hiding some of the information.
So, on April 27, Trump promised serious measures against Beijing and said that Germany already wanted to collect € 30 billion in compensation, while the United States wants even more.
In addition, Fox News announced on April 15 that the first coronavirus infected was working in a laboratory in Wuhan. It was from there that the virus allegedly leaked .
However, American scientists have denied versions about the creation of COVID-19 in the laboratory. Researchers concluded that the virus was not created artificially and is not genetically modified.
On April 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov judged attempts to bring claims to China over the pandemic.
An outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 virus COVID-19 occurred in Wuhan late last December. Outside of China, the disease was diagnosed in patients in more than 210 countries. On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 3 million people fell ill all over the world, more than 200 thousand patients died.
