(ORDO NEWS) — Currently, the appearance of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) is recorded everywhere.
In addition to the four (so far) shot down over the US and Canada, China says it is preparing to shoot down one in its airspace, and the Uruguayan Air Force is investigating reports and photos of flashing lights over the Termas de Almiron area.
Motivated by this, the US Navy shared its story of a mysterious object that appeared in the path of the Navy in 1945.
According to the US Naval Institute, a captain aboard the USS New York spotted a sphere in the sky and ordered it to be shot down, believing it to be a “Japanese balloon weapon”.
According to Lanson B. Ditto, who served on that ship at the time, the crew fired about 300 shots at the object before realizing it was a planet reflecting sunlight.
“About noon on December 9, 1941, we were heading south into the open sea when an aircraft was sighted,” Ditto said of the incident.
“We opened fire on what we thought was the plane. We had to evaluate. We installed a fuse to operate at the calculated height.
We started at 1524 meters and saw that he fell short, so we went up to about 2286 meters and also saw that he fell short. So, we raised it to a maximum of 3048 meters.”
The team was still unable to hit the mysterious object, which is not surprising since they were aiming for about 61 million kilometers below.
“Pretty soon there was a message from the navigator,” he added.
“It was determined that this is the planet Venus. It turned out that we fired 300 shells at the planet Venus.”
