US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Epic Games showed a technical demo of Unreal Engine 5 technology for the PlayStation platform, posting a video called Lumen in the Land of Nanite on YouTube. A preview of the game engine will be available at the beginning of 2021, and a full release for game developers at the end of next year.
Nanite and Lumen appearing in the title of the video are two key UE5 technologies. The first of them is micro-polygonal virtualized geometry: it makes it possible to create the most realistic three-dimensional models in 8K resolution, as in Hollywood blockbusters. A Lumen allows you to create realistic dynamic lighting; thanks to it, developers will be able to make high-quality scenes, simply indicating the position of the light sources, time of day, and reflective characteristics of objects.
The Unreal Engine 5 engine will be available for creating games on PCs with Windows and MacOS, tablets and smartphones on iOS and Android, as well as on game consoles – both current and next generation. Despite the large number of new technologies, UE5 developers have taken care of backward compatibility, so transferring projects from a previous version of Unreal Engine will be as simple as possible.
Recall that a technical demonstration of the UE4 engine took place in the summer of 2012. This technology was used to build graphics in games such as Fortnite, Final Fantasy 7, and Borderlands 3.
Earlier, we wrote that a geometry teacher found an Easter egg in Half-Life: Alyx and conducted a geometry lesson for schoolchildren with it, and Sony introduced a PS5 gamepad.
