(ORDO NEWS) — Excavations carried out by archaeologists on the territory of a monumental temple in Peru revealed unique burials, the age of which is dated between 72 and 989 AD.
Interestingly, the human remains found there were wrapped in high-quality cloth and were painted.
Four mysterious burial mounds located on the hill of Cerro Colorado near the town of Barranca in Peru have been identified as sites of potential archaeological significance.
Later it turned out that the mounds contain human remains and remains of the temple building.
The large-scale excavations were carried out by archaeologists from the Jagiellonian University and the University of Saint Mark as part of the project “Los valles de Barranca”, which means “Valleys of Barranca” in Spanish.
Archaeologists discovered destroyed burials in the form of burial scrolls, which were located in the ruins of a temple complex made of dried bricks.
According to the analysis, the burials belong to the time of the Wari Empire.
Later, the researchers also came across burials in the form of “burial bundles” placed inside the temple complex. It is noted that this method of burial is characteristic of the Paracas culture of the Peruvian Andes.
According to the tradition of the time, the body of the deceased was tied in the fetal position, and then wrapped in strips of cloth, inside which were placed various things that have ritual significance, such as scraps of cloth, dolls embroidered with religious motifs, and small gold badges.
In one of these burials, the remains of a boy whose skull was deformed were found.
Like the method of burial, this procedure is characteristic of the Paracas culture: when a child was born, special bandages and tires were placed on its head, which gave the skull an elongated shape.
The child’s body was wrapped in high-quality cloth, decorated with unique zoomorphic images, indicating his high status.
According to bioarchaeologist Lukasz Majczak, such fabrics have not yet been found in the entire Andes. The painted fabric found in the tomb is dated 772–989 pp. not.
It is reported that archaeological research began in 2022, and their results were announced in February 2023.
