UN: Plastic use threatens the world with triple planetary crisis
(ORDO NEWS) — Plastic in the ocean is provoking an ecological disaster on the planet, and its amount in the oceans could triple by 2040. This was stated by the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Andersen, according to UN News.
The damage from using plastic could be greater than it looks, Andersen said. He threatens the world with a triple planetary crisis. Namely, climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution.
By 2040, greenhouse gas emissions will account for 17% of total CO2 emissions. At the same time, today the annual economic losses amount to $ 2.5 billion.
To solve this problem, UNEP proposed, in addition to reducing plastic production, to move to a closed production cycle, improve waste management and intensify action at the national level.
