(ORDO NEWS) — The outbreak of the coronavirus is out of control, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a press conference.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis unlike any crisis in our lives, and this year’s General Assembly session will be unlike any other,” he added.
The Secretary-General noted that soon humanity will overcome the milestone of a million lives lost due to the coronavirus, and called the pandemic “the number one threat” to global security.
Many are pinning their hopes on a vaccine, Guterres said, but there is no panacea for the pandemic. He stressed that the vaccine alone will not fix the crisis.
But the vaccine should be seen as a global public good because COVID-19 knows no boundaries. We need a vaccine that is affordable and accessible to everyone – a vaccine for people,” the secretary-general added.
He called for a significant increase in the use of new and existing tools that can help fight the disease and provide life-saving treatment, especially over the next 12 months.
