US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The British auto industry was in the worst situation over the past three decades: sales of new cars in the United Kingdom collapsed in April by 97%.
Preliminary data released on Tuesday by the Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Dealers indicate that only about 4,000 new cars were registered during the month. This is the lowest monthly rate since 1946.
According to recent forecasts, annual sales of cars in the UK will be 1.68 million units. This will be the worst result since 1992. By the end of 2019, 2.3 million new cars were sold.
The April drop is comparable to Spain and Italy, which saw an almost 100% drop in the car market. The reason for this massive collapse was restrictive measures aimed at combating the spread of coronavirus: dealerships and car factories were quarantined for a month, and potential buyers found themselves in isolation.
