(ORDO NEWS) — The typhoon brought strong winds and torrential rains to China‘s eastern coastal regions and headed towards the Shanghai financial center.
The National Meteorological Center of China reported that Typhoon Hagupit hit the coast in Zhejiang province at about 3:30 a.m., with a wind speed of 136.8 km / h (85 mph) in the center.
He moved north at a speed of about 25 km / h in the direction of Shanghai. Hagupit was expected to gradually turn northeastward, going out to sea again on Wednesday morning and heading towards the Korean Peninsula.
China has ordered the evacuation of vulnerable coastal areas in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian in the south, withdrew fishing boats, and suspended ferry services and some trains.
In Zhejiang’s main manufacturing center, Wenzhou, south of Shanghai, authorities said they were evacuating 200,000 people to shelter and recalling more than 6,000 fishing boats to the port. Waves were reported on the coast at an altitude of 4.2 meters.
