Turkmenistan wants to extinguish gas crater that has been burning for 50 years

(ORDO NEWS) — The current President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, issued an order to find a way to quickly and effectively extinguish the gas crater.

It has been burning for half a century in the desert and among the inhabitants of the country it has received a slightly eerie name – “The Gate to Hell”.

The “Gate to Hell” gas crater is located on the territory of a small town called Darvaza. It is located in the very center of the rather large Karakum desert. It is considered by many to be the most important attraction in the country.

The crater reaches a depth of almost 30 meters, and its diameter is at least 70 meters. The formation of this crater happened in 1971, when prospecting drilling was carried out in this area. Geologists accidentally discovered a void underground.

After that, the earth collapsed and a huge crater appeared in its place, completely filled with gas. In order to prevent these gases, which threaten the health of local residents, from escaping in large quantities, it was decided to set them on fire. Scientists have calculated that the gas will run out in a matter of days, but it has been burning for five decades.

On January 8, 2022, the President of the country began to say that the burning of the crater has an extremely negative effect not only on the environment, but also on human health.

In addition, he added that a huge amount of natural gas will be consumed, which can bring good profit. That is why, in the near future, a way must be devised to extinguish this “eternal” fire.

The politician has repeatedly said that it is necessary to extinguish the crater. In 2010, there was talk of clogging the Gate to Hell, but it never came to fruition.
