(ORDO NEWS) — Studied the strength characteristics of the pylon of the domestic PD-14 engine as part of the composite wing box of the promising MS-21 airliner.
The work was carried out as part of the import substitution program under a contract with Irkut Corporation PJSC.
The pylon, made of titanium alloys and steel, has the shape of a beam and is attached to the power section of the wing with the help of several attachment points.
At the first stage, specialists from the Department of Static and Thermal Strength of the FAU TsAGI conducted a series of experimental studies on the ability of the unit to withstand the loads that occur during takeoff and landing modes and during various aircraft maneuvers in flight.
Eight cases of loading up to operational and maximum design levels were implemented. As a result, the required strength of the pylon structure and its suspension units was proved.
The next step was an emergency landing test, in which the engine, according to the regulations of the Federal Aviation Rules, must be separated from the aircraft.
This is necessary to prevent leakage and ignition of fuel, which ensures the safety of passengers in emergency landings.
In the course of strength studies, about 110% of the maximum design load was applied to the unit, demonstrating the safe separation of the engine with part of the pylon from the aircraft wing structure.
“We continue to study the strength of domestic components of the promising MS-21 medium-haul airliner. One of the main units of this aircraft is the PD-14 engine.
The design of its pylon is significantly different from the similar element of the western PW-1400G, previously used on the MS-21.
This also applies to the hinge points, as well as the principles laid down in the system of the safe separation of the aircraft engine.
The tests carried out proved the high strength and efficiency of the structural element – it proved to be the best,” said Mikhail Limonin, Deputy Head of the Department of Static and Thermal Strength of the FAU TsAGI.
MS-21 is a new generation passenger aircraft with a capacity of 163 to 211 passengers, aimed at the most massive segment of the air transportation market.
The aircraft will provide passengers with a qualitatively new level of comfort due to the largest cross-section of the fuselage in the class of narrow-body aircraft.
The MS-21 aircraft surpasses existing analogues in terms of its flight performance and economy.
First of all, thanks to the wing made of polymer composite materials, which was created for the first time in the world for narrow-body aircraft with a capacity of over 130 passengers.
