(ORDO NEWS) — The National Archives of the Netherlands has released a huge number of documents from the Second World War, among which there is a treasure map. It is believed that the place where the Nazis hid the jewelry is marked with a cross.
According to The Guardian , the National Archives of the Netherlands has made more than 1,300 documents publicly available, including a treasure map with “Nazi gold”.
Judging by the map, the treasure was buried in the ground near the small Dutch village of Ommeren.
Presumably, the treasure consists of four large boxes filled with diamonds, rubies, gold, silver and jewels. All this was stolen by Nazi soldiers from a bank in Arnhem in August 1944.
In April 1945, the Nazis lost Arnhem and were forced to hastily hide the stolen goods next to the Ommeren.
The authorities of the Netherlands have been trying to find the jewels for a long time, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
Modern treasure hunters
According to historians, it is impossible to accurately estimate the total value of the treasure, but it could be more than $16 million, according to some estimates.
Although no one knows if the jewels are still there, treasure hunters flock to the area around the village.
The Ommeren can barely handle the influx of people, which is why local authorities have issued a statement banning treasure hunters from digging the ground without their permission.
They also note that all archaeological finds must be declared – individuals do not have the right to appropriate the found jewelry.
