(ORDO NEWS) — Today in the PM video review, iron fighters cut, saw, shock and burst into flames in the arena of the American show BattleBots. Surprisingly, even in robot fights there are rules and weight categories.
If you have not yet firmly chosen the path in life, then today we will introduce you to a hobby for which it is not a pity to spend several lives. If not their own, then their own robots: the BattleBots League is an annual competition of remotely controlled combat vehicles.
Fighting almost without rules and in a chain-linked arena, steel gladiators fight for knockout, and almost every fight comes out spectacular.
From 2000 to 2002, the BattleBots show aired on the American TV channel Comedy Central from 2000, and since 2015 it has been revived on ABC, already in a modern spectacular format.
Take a look at this year’s SawBlaze vs. Razorback gladiator deathmatch in the qualifiers for a start.
It is worth noting that the rules in these battles still exist. BattleBots compete in four weight classes, from 60 pounds (27 kg) to 340 pounds (154 kg).
Contractions last for three minutes; a knockout is any heavy defeat that prevents the robot from continuing the fight for more than 10 seconds; statistically, such spectacular moments happen much more often than in boxing, in about half of the fights.
So it was in last year’s memorable duel, when the super-powerful pusher Overdrive and Chomp, armed with a dangerous steel sting, met in the arena.
Fights take place on a 48-foot (14.6 m) square arena, which contains additional traps: a heavy hammer, a meat grinder , etc.
The requirements for developers indicate that the robot can be “walking, rolling, jumping, flying, gliding, or whatever, as long as he can move in a controlled manner without causing damage to the arena.
Approximately the same broadly defined and allowed weapons: “overturning, percussion, grabbing, or any other mechanism – but at least one that can seriously damage another robot.”
Sometimes this damage looks really terrible – this was the case in the famous battle between the Blacksmith hammerer and the Minotaur, capable of inflicting powerful electric shocks on the opponent.
By the way, there is an important caveat in the rules: the combat system of a BattleBots participant can consist of more than one vehicle.
At the same time, the total weight of the vehicles must remain within the limits of the general requirements, and only one of them can be armed.
After watching dozens of fights, we can see that they try to use this technique quite often, but it seems that there has not been any benefit from it yet – for example, already this year, the cruel Bronco literally smashed to shreds both the main Chrome Fly device and its flying “assistant”.
We were able to select and show not all spectacular battles of BattleBots: look for new ones on the official YouTube channel of the show – and maybe you will come up with the idea of your own formidable combat vehicles? This hobby is ours.
