(ORDO NEWS) — Three cases of tick-borne encephalitis virus have been identified in the UK.
After research, it turned out that the causative agent of the deadly disease had spread widely across the country for the first time.
Three cases of tick-borne encephalitis virus infection have been found in patients in Yorkshire, Norfolk and on the Hampshire-Dorset border, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.
Further tests showed that the disease, which had hitherto usually only occurred in parts of Europe and Asia, had now spread widely in the UK.
In addition, experts consider it unlikely that she will disappear from the country.
“While the risk to the general public is very low, it is important that people take precautions to protect themselves from tick bites.
For example, covering ankles and feet, applying insect repellant and checking clothes and body for ticks, especially when visiting areas with tall grass such as forests, moorlands and parks,” said Dr Helen Callaby from UKHSA.
It is believed that infected ticks may have entered the UK with migratory birds.
Scientists suspected that the virus entered the country in 2019, but it was not possible to fully confirm the cases due to difficulties with testing.
At the same time, scientists note the possibility of vaccinating people working outdoors in areas where the virus is detected. However, it is not required for the general public.
