(ORDO NEWS) — Overflowing rivers in northern Colombia’s Antioquia Department damaged homes, blocked roads and left thousands of people isolated.
Authorities said the Apartado, Grande, Vijagual and Murindo rivers in the Uraba sub-region of the Antioquia department had flooded after heavy rains over the past few days.
The governor of Antioquia, Anibal Gaviria Correa, announced that a state of emergency has been declared in 5 municipalities: Murindo, Apartado, Turbo Chigorodo and Carepa.
The Colombian Civil Defense says about 2,000 people were injured in Apartado. One person died in Turbo Chigorodo. Local politician Omar Restrepo said up to 3,000 people are isolated in Murindo after flooding along the Murindo River.
In other parts of the department, on March 03, floods caused by flooding of rivers in the municipality of El Bagre damaged houses and affected dozens of families.
Earlier this month, heavy rain triggered a landslide in the municipality of Cocorna, Antioquia department, which destroyed 2 houses, killing 1 and injuring 3. The Antioquia government declared a state of emergency and reported damage to more than 80 homes.
Caldas, Choco, Cauca and Risaralda
Since the beginning of March, other regions of the country have also felt the effects of heavy rains, including the departments of Caldas, Chocó, Cauca and Risaralda.
One person died and three were injured as a result of a landslide in Chiebra Santa Barbara, municipality of Risaralda in the department of Caldas on March 06, 2022.
Heavy rain also triggered a landslide at Eastmine in Choco Department on 02 March. Civil Defense reported that 6 houses were destroyed, 12 damaged and about 60 people were injured.
In recent days, floods along the Cauca River have affected parts of the departments of Cauca and Risaralda.
The flood destroyed about 35 houses in Santander de Quilichao in the department of Cauca, injuring 175 people. About 500 people were affected in areas along the river in the municipality of La Virginia in the department of Risaralda.
One person was killed by a landslide in Belen de Umbria in the department of Risaralda on 02 March.
