(ORDO NEWS) — We all know the Earth is old, but it’s hard to imagine how old it is.
After all, what does 4.5 billion years really mean? How do you even realize this amount of time in our short-lived human brain?
Well, Business Insider did an incredible job with this 3 minute animation displaying the Earth’s timeline if time was the distance from Los Angeles to New York. And our worldview will never be the same.
We begin our journey in Los Angeles when the Earth formed 4.54 billion years ago. But we will not get very far on our journey through time and space until the moon appears after a planetary body hits Earth.
About halfway through the summit of Arizona, the largest rock in the world formed 3.95 billion years ago, and then, a few kilometers later – 3.8 billion years ago – there is the first evidence of life in the form of reproducing molecules.
But it wasn’t until Kansas, 2.7 billion years ago, when oxygen-producing cyanobacteria first emerged and then 200 million years later that significant amounts of oxygen accumulated in Earth’s atmosphere.
And then, believe it or not, it wasn’t until 600 million years ago that multicellular organisms emerged in Pennsylvania – across the country.
A lot is happening in Pennsylvania, such as the plants that inhabit the land and the development of amphibians. And by the time the dinosaurs become extinct, we are already in New York State.
So where are the people?
We’ll let you watch the video below to find out, and let’s just say it blows your mind. Especially when you see how much we have done in just 1.7 meters of time.
