(ORDO NEWS) — Austrian astrophotographer Michael Jäger took a series of stunning photographs of the very rare comet C/2022 E3, which visits the inner solar system every 50,000 years.
The last time her appearance could be observed by Neanderthals.
The images taken by Yager show that the comet’s tail is made up of matter that evaporates from the icy comet itself as it approaches the sun.
That is, the closer this space object is to the star, the higher the temperature on its surface becomes.
Typically, comets are several kilometers in diameter, but their tails stretch hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
Experts note that the comet will soon become visible to the naked eye, it will pass the minimum distance point with the Earth on its way on February 1-2, 2023 (this is 0.25 AU, that is, 1/4 of the distance of the Sun from the Earth, or 42 million kilometers).
