The “sea monster” from Russia

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Russia is creating a new “sea monster” – the A-050 ekranoplan, writes the American publication We Are the Mighty.

According to the publication, the dynamic hovercraft is planned to be launched in 2020. A-050, the publication notes, will be the development of the experimental “Caspian monster”, which served as the basis for the ekranoplan-rocket carrier “Lun”.

The most famous and successful ekranoplans of the USSR are the Lun and Eaglet projects. Multi-ton cars of the Lun type accelerated to five hundred kilometers per hour, were armed with anti-ship missiles and were practically invisible to radars.

The smaller Eaglet accommodated up to 150 soldiers and several infantry fighting vehicles.

Now developers offer the Ministry of Defense a new generation of ekranoplans. Through the use of modern materials, the A-050 Chaika-2 weighs about 50 tons and can take on board hundreds of soldiers or nine tons of cargo. With the help of aircraft engines, “The Seagull” will accelerate to 450 kilometers per hour, not only on the water surface, but also on ice or a flat steppe, and also overcome up to five thousand kilometers.

Earlier, Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said that Russia is developing a promising ekranoplan with missile weapons on board.

According to him, the ekranoplan will be used to protect the Northern Sea Route and patrol the Black and Caspian Seas.
