The number of people infected with coronavirus in the world exceeded 5 million

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The number of people infected with coronavirus worldwide exceeded 5 million on Wednesday, with most new cases reported daily in South America, overtaking the United States and Europe.

This marks a new stage in the spread of the virus, which peaked in China in February, before leading to large-scale outbreaks in Europe and the United States.

South America accounts for about a third of the 91,000 infections reported earlier this week. Europe and the United States alone accounted for just over 20% of cases.

A large number of new cases have been reported in Brazil, which recently overtook Germany, France and the UK and became the third most infected after the United States and Russia.

Brazil is second only to the United States in daily infection rates.

The first 41 cases of coronavirus were detected in Wuhan, China on January 10, and by April 1, 1 million people were registered in the world. Since then, according to Reuters, about 1 million new cases are reported every two weeks.

In less than six months of 2020, the number of people infected with coronavirus exceeded the annual total number of severe cases of influenza, which, according to World Health Organization estimates, ranges from 3 to 5 million.

The pandemic claimed more than 326,000 lives, although the true figure is believed to be higher since testing is still limited, and many countries do not include deaths outside hospitals in the statistics. More than half of all deaths were recorded in Europe.
