US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have discovered specific cells that become targets for the coronavirus, reports EurekAlert.
Based on RNA data, experts at the Massachusetts Institute and Harvard have identified subsets of cells that express two proteins that help the SARS-CoV-2 virus enter the body.
As it turned out, the virus attacks secretory cells in the nasal cavity, type II pneumocytes in the lungs, and enterocytes in the intestines, which are responsible for the absorption of nutrients.
The authors of the study note that these data should help doctors who are working on the creation of drugs that can affect COVID-19.
A pandemic of coronavirus infection COVID-19 has spread across almost the entire world. According to the latest WHO data, almost two and a half million people were infected, about 170 thousand died.
