(ORDO NEWS) —
It has been raining heavily in the south, southwest and central China for almost a week, threatening the integrity of the world‘s largest dam. 50 mm of precipitation fell, which is higher than the annual average.
Literally floods the Ngava-Tibetan-Qiang district in Sichuan. A hail of about 1 cm in size fell nearby in the regions. In the Gardze-Tibet Autonomous Okrug, a power plant was threatened with destruction.
The Xiaojing Huang River was blocked: now it holds 1 million cubic meters of water. In the near future, the Three Gorges Dam, which almost bursts at the seams, can not stand it. Small reservoirs have already been destroyed. There is so much water that a breakthrough of one reservoir in Danba County demolished a small settlement.
Authorities with scientists from the Chinese Academy of Construction Research are considering a plan to evacuate citizens from Yichang County, where the dam is located. The Yangtze River passes through 11 provinces and major cities. In the event of a breakthrough, settlements in the lowlands of the river will be wiped off the face of the Earth. Specialist Huang Xiaokun suggested that people run away today, since it is not known when the Three Gorges will collapse. But where to all people from large settlements to escape?
First, the district of Yichang will suffer from the dam, then – Yueyang, Wuhan and Shanghai. The consequences will be so serious that they are scary to imagine. The dangers of the dam were spoken of back in 1969, when they were just thinking of building. Most of the authorities were against it (it’s still difficult to sleep peacefully with a pool of water above your head), but in the end the project was implemented. Construction began in 1994, and was completed in 2009.
Today, water has risen to a critical level in 148 rivers. Of the 98 thousand reservoirs, 94 thousand are at risk. Flood control cannot hold water. If the rains continue, disaster is imminent.
