The destroyer Zumwalt first tested its guns Mark 46 MOD 2

(ORDO NEWS) — The Zumwalt destroyer first tested its 30mm Bushmaster II-based guns: this happened about a year after a couple of guns were installed on the ship. Recall that the GWS was mounted instead of the more powerful 57-mm artillery systems – this is just one of the changes in the design of the invisible destroyer that has been introduced in recent years.

The main task of Mk.46 Mod.2 will be the fight against surface targets. A successful test brings the ship closer to the moment it reaches full combat readiness.

The lead ship of the Zumwalt type – USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) – formally entered service in 2016. Since then, he was haunted by various kinds of technical difficulties, in particular the unsatisfactory operation of the power plant.

The main conceptual problem of the program was the cost of new ships, which forced to reduce the total number of destroyers planned for construction from 32 units to three.

However, the project has some good sides: it turned out earlier that Zumwalt is better prepared for the storm than many other warships.
