The Christmas star represents the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter
(ORDO NEWS) — A Christmas star is expected to appear at the end of December this year. It represents the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, this event occurs no more than once every 20 years.
Scientists from the Old Dominion University say that at the end of December 2020, the planets Jupiter and Saturn will come very close to each other, the distance between them will be several million kilometers. At the same time, when viewed from Earth on December 21, the named bodies of the solar system will look as if they are in contact.
This will form a luminous point called the Christmas star or the star of Bethlehem. Along with this, on the same day, another astronomical event will occur – the winter solstice. The day will be the shortest of the year and the night the longest.
The scientific world has long believed that the Christmas star is formed by three bodies: Venus, Jupiter and the bright star Regulus. The first merger of objects took place in about 2 BC. e. People who saw an event similar in visual effect to that expected in two weeks lived in 1226. The next conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter will take place in March 2080.
