(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have released a new image of NGC 4303 from observations made by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the ALMA radio observatory.
The galaxy NGC 4303 lies 55 million light-years from Earth towards the constellation Virgo. Like our Milky Way galaxy, it has a spiral structure, but there are a number of notable differences between the two.
NGC 4303 has an active core and is currently undergoing a burst of star formation. In addition, at least eight supernovae have ignited in the galaxy over the past century.
The new stars of NGC 4303 are formed from clouds of molecular gas whose emission was recorded by ALMA (indicated in gold).
The bluish areas in the background correspond to already formed stars. They were imaged using the instruments of the Very Large Telescope.
