US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The largest stars in the universe are some of the most amazingly complex objects in space. Indeed, giant stars have not been fully explained for decades, especially when they are near the end of their lives.
Stars activate nuclear fusion, turning lighter elements into heavier ones. This process leaves a little extra energy. This is not much, but when these fusion reactions occur millions or billions of times per second, it is enough for the star to work millions or billions of years.
Like ashes during a fire, the remnants of nuclear reactions sink to the star’s core, accumulating and preventing new reactions in this region, causing a fusion to take place in the envelope surrounding it.
At the beginning, stars form helium from the lightest element – hydrogen, with helium accumulating in the core, and synthesis in the shell. But as soon as temperature and pressure reach critical values, the star is able to burn helium, turning it into carbon and oxygen in the nucleus, where it is surrounded by a layer of helium, and it is surrounded by a layer of hydrogen burning.
Towards the end of their lives, stars form a giant nesting doll with an iron core surrounded by layers of fusion of silicon, magnesium, carbon, oxygen, helium and hydrogen.
