Reason for the soaring flight of hummingbirds is revealed
(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists at Harvard University have uncovered the genetic cause of the ability to soar in hummingbirds. Loss of the FBP2 gene resulted in muscle cells being able to quickly absorb fructose from flower nectar. The geneticists analyzed the genome of the long-tailed hermit hummingbird Phaethornis superciliosus and compared it with the genomes of other hummingbird species and 45 birds, such as the domestic chicken, pigeon and eagle.…

Female hummingbirds disguise themselves as males to avoid aggression
(ORDO NEWS) — In Jacobin hummingbirds, males are real “hooligans”: they behave aggressively towards females, driving them away from feeding places, so female birds have to constantly hide and try not to catch the “cavaliers” in the eye. However, about a fifth of the females have chosen a different strategy: instead of becoming the dull green coloration characteristic of their sex upon reaching puberty, they retain a bright blue-white plumage,…

Scientists have found out whether hummingbirds can survive in conditions of global warming
(ORDO NEWS) — As the world‘s climate changes inexorably, many species are forced to change their habitat, moving to cooler regions, such as the mountains. In a new study, scientists decided to test whether one species of hummingbird will be able to adapt to mountain conditions, which may one day save the lives of the descendants of these birds. As the Earth‘s climate changes, more and more animals face problems…

Scientists take hummingbirds up a mountain to see how climate change will affect them
(ORDO NEWS) — With drastic temperature changes around the world, wild animals are often forced to move to find suitable habitat, and scientists are working hard to understand how many species may find it difficult to find a new home. Animals moving to higher elevations face two challenges: colder temperatures and thinner, less oxygenated air (so it’s harder for them to breathe). In a new study, a group of Anna’s…

Hummingbirds can cope with global warming by moving to the mountains, but it will cost them dearly

Hummingbirds were able to understand the concept of numerical order
(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have noticed that hummingbirds can memorize sequences of numbers and build a food strategy based on them. They believe that this is the first case of performing simple mathematical operations by wild animals. Humans are the only creatures that can perform complex mathematical operations. However, some animals understand what counting and sequence are. A team of researchers from the University of St. Andrews in the UK…
