(ORDO NEWS) — While almost all countries decided to impose strict quarantine, Sweden did not even begin to close schools and restrict public life. The authorities told how they managed to prevent a large-scale epidemic.
Sweden did not follow the policy of the “closed city”: the only thing the authorities did was to close the upper classes and universities, and also allowed meetings of up to a maximum of 50 people. The leaders of the country agreed that each citizen is able to maintain a reasonable lifestyle.
Now in Sweden about 37 thousand patients with coronavirus have died – almost 4,400 people. Hospitals operate normally, they are not crowded, there are enough beds and equipment for everyone.
If people coexist so peacefully with the virus, is Swedish policy effective? As noted by the country’s chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, this can only be said after the epidemic is over. Only after the restoration of the work of all areas of activity in the countries can something be analyzed.
At the same time, he emphasized that the total closure of everything that is possible is an unreasonable decision, since it leads to negative social and economic consequences. States hoped they would make people sit at home until the vaccine arrived, but as it turned out, it did not exist.
The Swedish quarantine management model can last not even months, but years, while all elements of the economy continue to function.
Experts have suggested that already 40% of Stockholm residents are immune to Covid-19. Collective immunity will make it easy to survive the second wave of the disease this fall.
Sweden’s mistake was only that they did not protect nursing homes. As a result, mortality increased. For 10 million inhabitants, 4 thousand deaths occurred, while in neighboring countries only 16 thousand people died from 16 million inhabitants.
