Supergiant star Zeta Puppis

(ORDO NEWS) — Zeta Puppis or Naos is a supergiant blue giant star , one of the hottest and brightest stars in the Milky Way visible to the naked eye.

Naos is located at a distance of about 1080 light years from Earth , which means that this star is most likely the closest blue giant to the solar system .

Visually, Naos is more than 10,000 times brighter than the Sun, but due to a surface temperature of ≈40,000 degrees Celsius, most of the blue giant’s radiation is in the ultraviolet range.

Thus, the bolometric value (electromagnetic radiation at all wavelengths) of the Naos star is 500,000 times greater than that of our star. It is worth noting that Naos is about 28 times larger and 56 times more massive than the Sun.

Naos continuously generates a stellar wind rushing at a speed of more than 2500 kilometers per second. Because of such a violent temper, the star loses 10 million times more mass per year than our Sun does in the same period of time.
