(ORDO NEWS) — A few years ago, in 2016, NASA released stunning footage of a prominence breaking away from the Sun. Look how unusual this process looks!
The video was filmed (or rather, mounted from separate images) on February 3, 2016 using SDO equipment (NASA Solar Dynamics Laboratory). The materials were taken in the ultraviolet range invisible to humans with a wavelength of 304 angstroms.
Recall that prominences are dense condensations of relatively cold (compared to the solar corona) matter that rise and are held above the surface of the Sun by a magnetic field.
