(ORDO NEWS) — A scientific expedition has captured a rare sea creature in the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
The Ocean Research Foundation’s Nautilus Expedition has released video of a never-before-seen encounter. It happened about three kilometers below the ocean’s surface on Johnston Atoll, west of Hawaii.
Cameras filmed a “sea pen” attached to the ocean floor with 40cm tentacles protruding from its 2m stalk.
This species (solumbellula monocephalus) was previously found only in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
But experts said further analysis would determine whether the animal was actually a representative of the species or potentially new.
