Strange magnetized sunspot shows that something is happening to the Sun

(ORDO NEWS) — A new sunspot AR3088 has appeared in the southern hemisphere of the Sun. Its magnetic field is not normal.

Above is a map of magnetic fields on the Sun. According to Hale’s law, the magnetic poles of a sunspot should be located +/-, that is, positive (+) on the left and negative (-) on the right.

Instead, they are rotated 90 degrees; positive (+) is at the top and negative (-) is at the bottom.

It is a rare “perpendicular sunspot” whose magnetic poles are orthogonal to the Sun’s equator. What’s happening?

Perhaps something unusual is happening to the Sun’s magnetic dynamo below the surface where this sunspot grows. We’ll be keeping an eye on AR3088 to see what happens next.
