(ORDO NEWS) — For two years now, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx has been studying the asteroid Bennu, which poses some danger to our planet. In the latest images of the body surface, scientists have noticed six-light stones.
Experts cannot say what material the coughs originated from. They only noted that the objects are significantly brighter than the rest of the asteroid’s surface and, perhaps, their material coincides with the asteroid Vesta, which was studied earlier.
According to some assumptions and observations of the OSIRIS-REx spectrometer, the mysterious objects may consist of pyroxene. Experts do not believe that stones could have formed on Bennu since very high temperature is needed to form pyroxene. If it were the asteroid Vesta, then there would be many fewer questions.
This body is composed of pyroxene. This means that it was formed in areas with ongoing thermal processes.
The OSIRIS-REx device went into space in September 2016, and at the end of 2018, it reached the asteroid. Since then, the device has been regularly sending materials and photographs; in October, it is planned to take samples of the Bennu rock. The body is observed by an X-ray spectrometer and three cameras. The device should return to Earth in 2023.
