(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have found that people around the world are seeing fewer and fewer stars in the night sky. The fact is that the sky is getting brighter by 7-10% per year.
The researchers analyzed more than 50,000 observations by citizen scientists around the world from 2011 to 2022.
They noted that “the rate at which stars become invisible to humans in urban environments is enormous.”
The researchers found that the change in the number of visible stars can be explained by an increase in the brightness of the night sky. In Europe it was +6.5% per year, in North America – +10.4%.
“If development continues at this rate, a child born in a place where 250 stars are visible will only be able to see 100 stars there by their 18th birthday.”
