Somalia declares state of emergency due to locust outbreak

(ORDO NEWS) — Somalia has declared a state of emergency amid a plague of locusts that threaten to destroy a crop due in April.

In Somalia, nearly three million people are already food insecure.

Said Hussein Lid, Somalia’s Agriculture and Irrigation Minister, said the government has identified large swarms of locusts in the southern federal states of Hirshabelle, Southwest and Jubbaland.
