(ORDO NEWS) — A forest fire in the central Chilean region of Maule has destroyed at least 3,600 hectares of land, damaged several houses and is still not under control.
The fire, which has been burning since Monday in the communes of Molina and Río Claro, about 200 kilometers south of the capital Santiago, poses a threat to nearby homes, the country’s National Forest Corporation said in a statement.
While “the fire is generally of low intensity and spreads slowly,” aerial extinguishment is difficult “due to thermal inversion” preventing smoke from dispersing, the statement said.
The blaze damaged eight houses and destroyed two warehouses, according to the latest report from the National Emergency Management Office of the Department of the Interior and Public Safety.
Military forces, private forest crews and government agencies are working together to fight the fire.
