(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from New South Wales conducted climate research. It turns out that in the next 30 years, the temperature in Europe will seriously decrease. This is due to the slowing down of the Gulf Stream.
Warm temperatures in Europe are provided by a warm current in the Atlantic Ocean. It was like this for many thousands of years in a row. But now global climate change can seriously harm the Gulf Stream.
The speed of currents in the ocean depends on the density and pressure of dense salty masses. Global warming has led to the melting of glaciers, which enrich the oceans with fresh water.
Due to this, the density of H2O in the ocean also changes. Ocean waters lose their characteristics, which leads to a weakening of ocean currents.
If global warming is not slowed down, the speed of underwater currents may drop by 40% in the next 30 years. Matthew England, one of the authors of the study, says this.
The UN warns of a cooling and water crisis
The UN prepared a report specifically for the conference on water resources. It tells about the sharp increase in the level of water consumption on the planet, about the drought in many countries.
After analyzing the last 40 years, scientists came to the conclusion that the level of consumption of water resources on Earth increases by 1% annually.
At such rates, by 2050, 2.4 billion people will face a shortage of drinking water, and the need for it in megacities will increase by 50%. The countries of the Middle East and the Sahara will be without drinking water.
At the same time, Europe is facing a serious cooling down. Subzero temperatures can be experienced in the European part of the continent practically all year round.
Scientists have conducted many studies that show that global warming is already an irreversible process. Glaciers continue to actively melt, and this will lead to a global cataclysm.
