(ORDO NEWS) — The Seoul government has announced plans to build the world‘s largest ferris wheel without spokes.
The huge metal ring will reach an impressive height of 180m and provide visitors with a magnificent view of the beautiful South Korean landscape.
The structure, which is planned to be built in Haneul Park in the capital Seoul, is called the Seoul Ring. It has been in development for some time, but the place for its placement was chosen quite recently.
The Seoul Ring will also be the second largest Ferris wheel in the world. The first place is currently occupied by Ain Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which reaches a height of 250 m.
According to a statement from the Seoul government, announcing the location of the project site, “Haneul Park is considered a significant site due to its symbolism as a gateway to Seoul and a unified Korea, as well as a place that is geographically close to North Korea, which indicates the harmony and reunification of the Korean race.”
The location will allow visitors to see downtown Seoul as well as the Hangang River and Namsan and Bukhansan Mountains.
The park is also the site of an old municipal landfill, which also helps to achieve the goal of ecological harmony.
The Seoul ring will deviate from the traditional spoked ferris wheel design and use new technologies and techniques to create a futuristic spokeless design.
“The city has consulted with domestic and international architecture and engineering experts to ensure construction safety and structural integrity of the spokeless Seoul Ring structure,” the municipality said in a statement.
“The city plans to complement and develop more progressive and creative projects in collaboration with the private sector.”
The Seoul Ring will be an entertainment facility, but the city plans to use the site as a cultural complex on Nanjido Island, which once hosted a nearly 100-meter-tall, nearly 2,800,000-square-meter mound of urban debris.
The park is one of several on the site of the former landfill, and the city plans to integrate the new attraction into future festival events.
