Sedentary lifestyle leads to an increase in heart size in adolescents

(ORDO NEWS) — A sedentary lifestyle can increase heart size in teenagers, scientists from the University of Eastern Finland warn.

The results of the study suggest that an enlarged heart may be a negative side effect associated with a sedentary lifestyle that is common among young people.

Researchers have studied the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, light physical activity, and moderate to vigorous physical activity on heart structure and function.

Of the 530 adolescents who participated in the study, the researchers found that a sedentary lifestyle and moderate to vigorous physical activity were associated with increased left ventricular mass.

However, the increase in heart mass associated with a sedentary lifestyle was three times greater than the increase in heart mass associated with physical activity.

It is known that an increase in heart mass in adults increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and death by 7-20%.

Therefore, scientists believe that an enlarged heart in adolescents may be a negative side effect associated with a sedentary lifestyle, especially since this lifestyle is often associated with obesity.

However, light exercise was not associated with an increase in heart mass, but with an improvement in heart function.

This means that young people need to understand that even a little physical activity can have a positive effect on their health and reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future.

The study also showed that the effects were similar in both normal weight and obese adolescents.
