(ORDO NEWS) — The monkeypox virus may show its first mutations earlier than scientists expected, reports the Financial Times, citing research.
According to scientists, mutations relate to the rate of transmission of a disease from person to person. And the number of mutations in the monkeypox virus that is spreading this year has been unexpectedly high.
“(The outbreak) is caused by a virus that presents many more mutations than we could expect from this type of virus,” the publication reports.
The researchers report that they have been able to detect more than 50 mutations.
Andrey Lomonosov, an expert on the HealthNet market of the National Technology Initiative, told Izvestiya that since WHO has not yet declared the outbreak of monkeys a pandemic, then there is no need for this.
The expert also urged citizens to listen to official sources of information and not pay attention to rumors.
Earlier, the World Health Organization reported on the total number of cases of monkeypox infection in the world.
According to WHO, since the beginning of this year, more than 3.2 thousand confirmed cases of infection with monkeypox have been detected.
The day before, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a pandemic. The organization emphasized that the outbreak “must be eliminated by taking immediate action wherever the virus is transmitted.”
They clarified that at the moment 3417 confirmed cases of the disease have been identified in 58 countries, while the rate of infection is increasing every week.
