(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have warned of the possible emergence of a new ocean in the future, according to NBC News.
According to the researchers’ calculations, after about five to ten million years, a tectonic fault will form in the eastern part of Africa, as a result of which the continent will “split” into two parts.
This section of the continent is located in the Afar region of Ethiopia, which is located at the junction of three tectonic plates that are slowly separating from each other. In 2005, a crack formed in the region, the length of which is now about 56 kilometers, experts remind.
“This is the only place on Earth where you can study how a continental rift becomes an oceanic rift,” said Christopher Moore, professor at the University of Leeds in the UK.
Scientists speculate that the phenomenon is caused by the increasing pressure from the rising magma. They now track the movement of the plates using GPS.
