(ORDO NEWS) — Extremely high temperatures are observed in 57% of the world‘s oceans, a corresponding study by scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium was published in the journal PLOS Climate.
Experts analyzed data on ocean surface temperatures over the past 150 years. It turned out that for the first time more than half of its area was overheated in 2014, after which the trend continued to develop.
However, in the late 19th century, only 2% of the ocean’s surface “experienced extremely high temperatures,” the study says.
Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization said that 2021 was one of the seven warmest years on record.
