(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have refuted the idea that smoking promotes socialization. As it turned out, smokers in old age become more lonely people.
The authors of the new scientific work used data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA), which included 8,780 English people aged 50 and over.
They also rated the degree of loneliness on the UCLA scale.
All participants were asked how often they communicate with friends, acquaintances and relatives, visit cinemas, museums, go to meetings of residents of the house, go to church, whether they are members of political parties, whether they attend evening classes, gyms, clubs, etc.
It turned out that smokers are more prone to loneliness and social isolation.
Such people were less likely to communicate with family and friends, and also participated less in public life. In addition, smokers were more likely to live alone.
